Did Gordon Ramsay BurGR impress or disappoint me?

I would account for some of my food obsession to be blamed on celebrity chefs, who make cooking look so easy, television appearances building them up as larger than life and serving up food looking so appetizing. So when I get to dine at one of these celebrity chef’s restaurants, it is with some trepidation – what if it disappoints me?  And after a stunning meal and chat with Top Chef Michael Voltaggio at Ink Los Angeles (https://myfoodfixation.wordpress.com/2013/12/19/ink-los-angeles-ca/) my expectations were even higher than normal.

Danielle, Samantha, Eric and I dined at chef Gordon Ramsay’s BurGR in Las Vegas for lunch today.  It is hard to not be impressed by the ambiance both in and outside the restaurant, which is not only playful and fun (like the 30-foot-long glass-enclosed flame wall), but sophisticated with huge attention to detail.  There are large posters of Gordon with Hell’s Kitchen styled graphics behind him, the servers wear denim with the GR brand on the rear and the place settings are unique and attractive.

The service was fast, and the server was warm and engaging. I loved the passion with which our waiter described the dishes and enthusiasm when describing his personal favorites.  We started with the Truffle Parmesan Fries, which were really outstanding. They were served with ketchup and truffle aioli, but they happily brought me the curry ketchup to try, which I loved.  Eric noted that the fries had parmesan not only on the top, but must have been well shaken before served, as even the fries on the bottom were covered.

Eric chose the Farm Burger, which is apparently the servers favorite (duck breast bacon, English sharp cheddar and fried egg), and I chose the Hell’s Kitchen Burger, which is apparently the crowd favorite (asadero cheese, roasted jalapeno peppers, avocado and oven roasted tomato).  The kids settled with the American Burger.

So here’s the thing: you take one of the most well know celebrity chefs and instead of letting them serve you a 5 start gourmet dish, you get a burger.  He can only completely disappoint you, or totally impress you.

And totally impress us he did!  We all felt like our burger truly was exceptional.  Personally, I was stunned by the amount of flavor that was in the Hell’s Kitchen Burger, the delicate touches that the over roasted tomato offered and the soft seeded bun.  Given the opportunity to deliver a so-so burger or completely amaze us, Gordon Ramsay succeeded in impressing.
